Shopping With Daddy

La Story:
What do you do when an American dad on a big fat expat relocation package with beaucoup disposable income asks you to help pick out a gift for his wife that's quintessentially French?

You say, "bien sûr. I'm flattered that you asked."

Then you take daddy to Hermès.

La scene
The Hermès flagship boutique, 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré.

Les Players
La Mom, Chicago Dad, La Vendeuse.

Le gift:  A Birkin bag.

Le price:
Way too much

La dialogue:

Scene 1:
La Mom: You need to get Chicago Mom a gift that's the epitome of French style. Something that will always remind her of the years spent living in Paris while you climbed the corporate ladder. She needs a Birkin.

Chicago Dad: A what? Like Jane Birkin?

La Mom: Exactly. A Birkin bag is a classic Hermès leather accessory that any French woman with money and taste has in her wardrobe. It's a staple. Elegant. Classy. Timeless. Definitely worth the investment.  And très French!

Chicago Dad: Ok, sold. Now help me pick one out.

Scene 2:
La vendeuse: Puis-je vous aider?

La Mom: Did you hear the sales lady ask how she could help us? That's so un-French.

Chicago Dad: La Mom, I just realized...is THIS the Hermès store that had an incident with Oprah a few years ago? Didn't they close the store on her before she finished shopping? Am I shopping in a boutique that Oprah Winfrey has shopped in? So cool!

La Mom: This is the one and only.

Chicago DadS'il vous plaît, I'd like to buy the olive bag.

La vendeuseUn très bon choix, Monsieur. That will be 12,000 euros. You can pick up the bag next May.
Chicago Dad: As in 2012. There's a one year wait?

La vendeuseMais bien sûr. Here's your reservation slip. Merci and see you next year.

Chicago Dad: Don't you need a deposit? It's a 12,000 euro bag after all.

La vendeuse: It's not necessary.

Chicago Dad: But what if I don't come back in a year to pick it up?

La vendeuseOh Monsieur, don't worry. If you don't come back to buy it, someone else will. It'll be sold in ten seconds flat the minute I put it on display.

La Conclusion: Try Louis Vuitton if you want to avoid a one year wait for a luxury French handbag.
Louis Vuitton flagship boutique: 101 Avenue des Champs-Elysées, 75008 Paris.

Every product is like this...we waited 3 months for a sink...3 months for our lit canape (pull out couch). Just ridiculous!

And 12,000 euros for a bag is CRAZY....and I think a waste of income. I'd rather have save more for a vacation home.

I can't even get my mind wrapped around that to process it properly. I ask myself, "would I if I could?"....

Who is San Diego dad (the one who asked about Oprah)?

positively insane price. just saying.

Or you could send him to Les 3
Marches de Catherine B. on Rue Guisarde. They have vintage and practically brand new Hermes bags. Just as expensive, but available NOW! I always find myself 'licking their window' when I'm in Paris...

Oh la la - I'm simultaneously repulsed, shocked and jealous. But you know, LV has also sold out of many of its bags... what's a moneyed fashionista to do??

@TN @Curtain @SueJ -
It is sooo much money. I can think of many other things to do with that kind of money (like donating some of it). That said, it sure was fun to help Chicago Dad. I'l never spend that much on a bag.

@Brenna - thanks for stopping by!

@Ulrike Dubai - Great idea. I love to window lick myself.

@Fifi- Don't mention it ma belle!

@AnnieC - It's Chicago Dad. Oops! I wanted to disguise San Diego Dad's ID, but apparently forgot to change all references. Thanks for your help!

Oohhh lucky Chicago mom! I bet he won't have to wait a year. I was told the same thing but it only took 5 months for my birkin. Glad I bought mine when I did though because I didn't pay 17k! *swipes brow* ....I've got a bargain basement birkin lol! Worth every penny, and a classic forever! *winks* Vanna

And we all know who will snatch up that ridiculously expensive bag if he doesn't come back for it. :)

@Virginia It won't be *moi*, that's for sure! Unless I can squander the French Fries' American college fund and hope they get some big bilingual scholarship... ;)

I agree with Ulrike, Dubai. Les 3 marches de Catherine B is a great alternative. You can find Birkin bags for under 12000 and you can also bystep the famous waiting list. Tell Chicago Dad he can check out the website at http://www.catherine-b.com

But the line outside of LV might take until next year!

My heart would jump out of my chest if I bought a 17k handbag. I'm still revving up to buy a 1k handbag and don't know if I can go through with it.

I love this story. Felt like I was there with you.
