Ripe for Fashion

When Parisians shed their heavy winter coats, sometimes you get some surprises. In my case it’s look-away-or-you’ll-be-blinded white legs.

And then there are the women whose burgeoning bellies give away what they’ve been up to while hibernating. As soon as the coats go back in the armoire, it’s like the whole city got knocked up overnight.

Leave it to Les Parisiennes to flaunt their bumps like they’re the latest fashion accessory.

And the men eat it up.

I was amazed – make that shocked – that in my last trimester with Big Fry, I literally had cammionneurs hanging out of their truck windows to get a better look at my swollen silhouette.

Guess Frenchmen like their women ripe.

Parisiennnes work the fertility goddess angle for all it’s worth. Here’s the maternity fashion show I was treated to on the terrace of Neuilly’s chic lunch spot, Durand Dupont:

Pre-maman #1: Skinny maternity jeans, gauzy peasant top, fine-knit slim scarf, cropped light-blue leather bomber jacket, and white peep-toe stiletto pumps.

Pre-maman #2: Purple tunic flowing over cropped black leggings, long jet-and-freshwater pearl necklace, Marc Jacobs bag, black patent leather high-heel sandals.

Pre-maman #3: Long white silk blouse cinched under the bump with a silver vachette leather belt, lime-green maternity Capri pants, multicolored silk scarf as headband, and silver beaded high-heeled mules.

High-heeled mules when you’re “pregnant up to your teeth”, as they say en français? Give me a break!

I glanced ruefully down at my comfy ballet flats. (At least they were Repettos!) My only consolation was that these fashionista pre-mamans would soon have spit-up on their suede jackets and diaper leaks on their white Gerard Darel jeans.

I think we can break French mommy style down to a simple shoe equation:

Pre-maman = stilettos

Post-maman = Repettos

Ahhh, to have fashionable clothes for pregnant women - what a blessing. That certainly wasn't the case when I had my three kids - it was more like burlap bags and bows. Gag.

I remember hiding my bump as long as possible. The clothes were made that way and that was only 7 years ago! Clearly had my babes in the wrong country!

How funny! In America, most pregnant women just look frumpy. Leave it to France to give maternity some style.

Wish I were there with you to see this live!
Where do these fashionable pre-mamans shop for these oh so hot looks?

I can't believe they're still able to squeeze their feet into those shoes that late into their pregnancies! My meatloaf feet could barely fit into a flip flop! LOL!

Come now, the clothes will not be soiled...that is what the nounou (Nanny for anyone not living in France) is for! Love your blog, I live here and you make it very exciting.

What about the little swollen feet detail? I couldn't (read wouldn't) dream of pumps when preggers!

Haha. Yeah, I was waiting to comment on all that heel wearing. My feet would be sooo done. I do appreciate the cute fashions though... when I was pregnant I could NEVER find anything cute to wear or that fit. It all looked like I was playing dress up in my grandmother's clothes, lol.

Preggers or not, french women always blow me away with their gorgeous ensembles!I'm a post mamans who likes her repettos and havianas too. It takes a very special evening out, sans le bebe, to wear my heels! Love the post!

I loved this post. Karma for maman.

Santiago has no sense in style. How I long for any sense of being put together--pregnant or otherwise.

LOL "Pre-maman = stilettos

Post-maman = Repettos"

Yeah, let them wear heels as long as they can, 'cause once they are carrying a baby or running after a toddler, flats are a much better way to go ;-)

Nooooooo heels for me when I was preggos. I did it once and decided that it was my excuse to put those heels away for a while. :)

I was more of a jeans and comfy tops kinda preggo. Nothing fancy here.

That's pretty cool, working to keep the fashion sense even while another life is flipping and flopping inside. I plan to be the kind of pregnant chick who's chic...says the woman who has never been pregnant.

I've even got some shopping websites on...retainer, if you will.
